RABBI HAROLD WHITE TO LEAD BOTH ROSH HASHANAH AND YOM KIPPUR SERVICES IN SILVER SPRING FOR FIRST TIME!

Rabbi Harold White, Senior Jewish Chaplain at Georgetown University for over 40 years, and rabbi at the Interfaith Families Project (IFFP), will lead both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services at Christ Congregational Church (CCC), 9525 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20901.

Rosh Hashanah:

  • September 28, 7:00-9:00 PM
  • September 29 10:00 AM - Noon, with Tashlich Service

Yom Kippur:

  • October 7: Kol Nidre, 7:00-9:00 PM
  • October 8: Morning Service: 10:00 AM - Noon
  • October 8: Evening Service, 5:00-7:00 PM, with Break-the-Fast following service

Rabbi White will be joined by Jessi Baden-Campbell as cantor, a mezzo-soprano who studied with Cantor Sue Roemer.

This will be the first time that Rabbi White will hold Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah Services outside of Georgetown University. Thousands of metro DC residents and Georgetown students have attended the Rabbi's Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services through the decades because they are accessible and welcoming, especially for interfaith families. Hundreds of these families have sought out the Rabbi when it comes to celebrating weddings, funerals, baby naming ceremonies, and other rites of passage.

Rabbi White is a renowned teacher of theology, having studied with many of the great Jewish scholars of the 20th century including Abraham Joshua Heschel. He has taught in the Theology Department of Georgetown and has been very active in creating a milieu for Jewish-Christian theological dialogue in the greater Washington, D.C. area. He joined the Interfaith Families Project six years ago and brings with him his vast knowledge, history, and experience.

We are honored to sponsor these services for metro DC residents. Children able to sit through a two-hour service are welcome. There will be a nursery room available for parents who wish to take their little ones there. The services will be egalitarian, combining the traditional with the progressive. They will also feature as Cantor, Jessi Baden-Campbell, mezzo-soprano "a voice to reckon with" (Toronto Star) and a native of Washington, DC. Equally at home in opera, recital and oratorio, Jessi honed her knowledge and love of Jewish liturgical music with cantor Sue Roemer. Ms. Baden has performed at the Kennedy Center and with the Washington Opera Repertory Theatre as well as with a wide range of regional and local opera companies.

IFFP is a community of 120 families in which one spouse is Jewish and the other Christian (though we do have and welcome families of one faith). They offer a year-round program with religious education for children, nursery through teen group, services and adult education with Rev. Julia Jarvis and Rabbi White, as well as a roster of activities and events.
